Informative Critiques- Section I

Post your critiques to our first speech (informative) to this blog. Be sure to use details and illustrate to me that you understand the criteria necessary for effective speechmaking. Post three strength and three improvements. Be sure to include your suggestion for correcting the necessary improvements. Enjoy your spring break!

  1. Mykim was very knowledgeable about her topic. She displayed confidence by not executing any nervous habits such as saying “umm” or shifting her weight from foot to foot or hip to hip. She also looked down at her note cards minimal times, which gave me the feeling she knew what she was talking about. A few things that I would suggest she keep in mind for her next speech would just to speech a little louder and clearer, as well as show a little more enthusiasm in her topic. Other than that I think she did a great job informing us about sexual harassment in the workplace.

  2. Overall, I would have to say Stacy presented a very good speech. He was very knowledgeable on his topic, and this is key to making an extraordinary speech. Stacy also cited very well on his PowerPoint, and used transitions very well to make a smooth shift from point to point. He appeared pretty comfortable as well throughout his speech. As far as things that need to be improved, he needs to take his hands out of his pockets. This can be fixed by simply realizing that he is doing it, he could also put his hands on the podium for example. Another thing that could be improved upon is the fact that there was minimal enthusiasm. I would suggest to improve this by making different tones and loudness with his voice. Last, I also found that Stacy would use many "uhs" and "ums". This is something that many people do not realize they are doing. This can be fixed by consciously realizing that he is saying those phrases. But, overall Stacy did an excellent job with his speech.

  3. Vanessa was very comfortable and confident when she delivered her speech. Her vocal was smooth, there was no “umm or uh”. I really like her attention getting and the way she delivered her speech. It went very smooth and each point is very clear. Vanessa also cited all of her sources and transition very smoothly from point to point. She made good eyes contact with the audience. One of the things I like about her presentation is that she gave good example after each point. Vanessa also seemed very knowledgeable about her topic. She looks at her note cards but only to read the sources. I would suggest Vanessa to keep her posture straight instead of putting one leg in front of the other for her next speech. Also, she needs to make sure that her PowerPoint slide is up to speed with her topic. Other than that, Vanessa did an excellent job.

  4. Overall I would say that Rachel did a very good job up there. Her attention grabber was good. She was very natural and comfortable talking to the audience. She spoke loud and clear. There were some sentences where it almost seemed like she was asking a question. While she was saying some statistics and facts it seemed like she was less confident with what she was saying. Her nervous habit seems to be that she says "um" a lot. For future speeches I would just suggest to her that she practice a little more that way she becomes more confident with what she is saying and don't stumble on her words as much.

  5. I think that Christina did a very good job in her speech. I thought that her eye contact was good when she was giving it, but unfortunately she spent too much time looking down at her notecards. At times it was almost as if she was reading off them. Other then that she did a great job, she had good posture, spook clearly and seemed to know what she was talking about.

  6. Jen did a great job delivering her speech. She spoke with confidence and authority and she was knowledgeable on the subject she was presenting. Her thoughts were organized and the content contained in her slides supported the information she was verbally communicating to the class. Jen presented herself well, but her posture appeared weak. Perhaps she could improve her posture by appearing more relaxed but firm. Finally, I felt her speech could use a pause or two in the attention getter to allow the viewer take in what she was presenting.

  7. Kyle D

I would definitely be able to tell you that Kyle felt very comfortable and confident giving his speech. He mentioned a few times that he did not know that much about cyber-bullying until after he had research for it, and that showed that he made the extra effort to learn all about the topic. He did not sway much or have any distracting body signals or hand gestures. He started the presentation with a good attention grabber and then thoroughly explained the topic and thesis. He made good citations within the work, and the flow of his presentation was on point with the power point. Kyle definitely made eye contact with most of the people in the room. The one thing I would say is that a few times he kept his gaze directed towards me, or the professor but I believe he would not have done so, if he was not aware of who was commenting on his presentation. Otherwise he did an excellent job getting his point across and keeping me interested. Good job Kyle!

  8. Overall, Mike C did a very good job when presenting his speech. Although, he moved around a lot which made him look a little nervous, he had exceptional eye contact and seemed very confident. He also used good examples which were easy for the audience to relate to. Another one of his strengths were that he had animated facial expressions which showed a lot of confidence. However, there were very few citings during his presentation. Also I would suggest to him to strengthen his conclusion. I felt if he would add in a memorable statement that connected with the audience it would of been a much better ending.

  9. Overall I think Dave did a very good job, he did not seem to use the "uh or um's". He seemed very confident while up there and seemed to know the information. I thought he sounded very conversational and relaxed. Something I think that could be improved was the verbal sitings.

  10. Overall, Mike H's speech was done very proficiently especially with the fact that he was the only person of the group presenting. He came out with a strong introduction, sounded extremely confident, and presented himself in a manner that was understandable to the whole audience. Throughout the speech his posture began to grow weaker as he was walking around the front of the room moving back and forth towards the powerpoint. This may have been to the lack of notecards, but he ultimately knew his information very well. His eye contact was extremely strong, and for the future he may want to have a few notecards, not move back and forth, and use more transitions because there may not have been many if any at all.

  11. Kristen first had some problems with her Ums and Ohs, only time and more experience in front of the class can fix that. She stood straight and did not move around or do anything distracting.

I liked how she moved her hands. visually it made her seem more informed and that she knew what she is speaking about. She did speak a little bit too fast but I blame it on the nerves.

Her voice is very conversational and I enjoyed her speech very much. I thought everything went well and overall she was a great speaker.

  12. In the beginning Joshua’s posture was a little off because he had his feet crossed, but as he went on with his presentation it was clear that he became more comfortable and exhibited more confidence while standing in front of the class. The attention getter he used was a weak part of his speech because it was confusing. I wasn’t sure what connection it had to the point he was trying to get across. He also needs to work on verbally citing his sources and using them in his presentation. His volume and tone were very good which made listening to him easy. He connected with the audience and made his presentation enjoyable and informational. In the future he can work on his attention getter and transitions to make his speech flow better and possibly use a few note cards to write down citations so he can incorporate them when needed.

  13. I critiqued Brandon; although, there wasn't much to say about him. He did a nice job with his presentation. Very vocal and comfortable up there. His topic was creative and new. The only problem I think, was Brandon did not give enough "Why me..." reasons, he broke the tension well at the start, and he said nice things about the person he was speaking to, but forgot to mention good things about himself to make the person remember him and want him over other potential candidates.

  14. Mike H. did a good job presenting. He was very confident when he was speeking, especially because he was the only one in his group. Three strengths he had were that he had really good eye contact, he kept the audience involved by asking us questions, and he knew his information quite well for not using any notecards. Three things I would tell Mike to improve would be the way he kept moving around during his speech, he was reading off most of the powerpoints, and I think he could have done a better job informing the audience of when he was changing topics during the speech. Overall, Mike is strong with communicating to an audience and keeping them involved, however he could improve his posture and practice his speech more before he presents so he is not turning his back to the audience to read his slides.

  15. I felt that Jen T had very well done presentation. Any audience member could see that she was very confident up at the podium. She knew her facts and one can tell she did a lot of research. She was citing both on the power point and verbally very well. There only a couple that she needs to improve upon, which are that she read off the note cards a little bit and also she spoke a little too fast. These two things that she did wrong can be improved upon very easily. With reading off the notecards, that could be easily fixed by practicing more by saying your presentation out loud to others. I know the way I practice is I do my speech it in front of my friends, which makes more confrotable when facing in audience in the class room. In order to slow down I found out that when a person memorizes his or her speech they should do it in a slow manner, not a at fast reading pace. All in all Jen did a great job.

  16. Mike H. presented his speech by himself, which is hard. I was impressed that he did not use any index cards, but he did look at the PowerPoint a bunch of times. He had creative ideas, but they were not organized enough, which was evident in his PowerPoint and the way he spoke, for example he said the phrase “you know” frequently. He did not verbally mention his sources adequately. I thought he connected with the audience well, he added humor to his speech. He had good images too. Although he connected with audience, he moved around too much, throughout the presentation he walked to the PowerPoint. He had a conversational voice and good eye contact, all he really needed was more preparation.
